Abstract
Hypertension is a non-communicable disease that affects a lot of people, which needs a lifetime therapy with many side-effects. Thus, a supportive therapy is needed. Yellow and purple sweet potato contains high potassium and could be considered as supportive therapy for hypertension. The purpose of this research was to compare the effects of yellow and purple sweet potato in reducing blood pressure. This research was a quasiexperimental study that involved 30 male adult subjects using pre-test and post-test, with two-week break. Measured data was the decrease of blood pressure after consuming yellow and purple sweet potatoes. Data analyzed using Wilcoxon statistical test. The results showed that yellow and purple sweet potatoes could reduce systolic blood pressure very significantly (p ≤0,001). Furthermore, purple sweet potato was more effective in reducing the systolic blood pressure with the average of 8,7 mmHg reduction compared to yellow sweet potato which resulted in 6,2 mmHg reduction. However, for reducing the diastolic blood pressure, both purple and yellow sweet potatoes were equally beneficial (p 0,258). In conclusion, purple and yellow sweet potatoes can be consumed as a supportive therapy for hypertension.
