Abstract

This thesis is an attempt to analyze theme through the diction used in three of Edgar Allan Poe’s poems. “To One Departed”, “To One In Paradise”, and “Annabel Lee” are the three poems which will be discussed in the thesis. The three poems are regarded as several of the best poems by Edgar Allan Poe. They are mainly talking about lost, specifically how losing someone precious will eventually affect a person. The diction used in the poems are filled with emotion and wonder. Each stanza is like a chapter in a novel, making the poems fluid in pacing and enhance the stories that are told in the poems. The theme of “To One Departed” is “Losing a loved one may strip one’s passion of life”, the theme of “To One In Paradise” is “Losing a loved one may bring sorrow to one”, and the theme of “Annabel Lee” is “Losing a loved one does not mean losing the love for the loved one“. The present paper aims to see the theme of each poems through the diction used in the poems.
