Abstract

Fantastic Art is not a new genre: prehistoric cave paintings seem to depict mythical creatures like the unicorn. As with some of the earliest pictures produced by civilization--such as those of the Assyrian half-fish, half-man Oannes--these may have some sort of religious origin, and almost certainly a mythical one. The history of Fantastic Art can be said to find its origins in a mainstream art. Artist such as Leonardo da Vinci and Hieronymus Bosh produced work of such imaginative strength that they can surely described as the earliest of fantastic artists. Fantastic Art is an art of ideas, without the inspiring genius of imagination the results will almost invariably be unsatisfactory.
