Abstract

Higher education educators in Indonesia face continuous challenges to provide quality teaching, to adapt the needs and abilities of the students. The “Flipped Classroom” method is a teaching method which flips the learning activities inside and outside of the traditional classroom. While normally the lecturing of the materials are done when students are attending face-to-face meetings, this method places the learning of the materials outside of the classroom independently by providing materials they must learn prior to attending the class. On the flip side, students will complete exercises and the teacher can provide assistance in solving their statistics problems. This study is designed as a quasi-experimentation study on the Statistics and Probabilities course at the Information Systems program, Maranatha Christian University. The study participants were all 15 students taking this course in the even semester 2012/2013 from February – June 2013. Two questionnaires were distributed in the mid and the end of semester to detect the understanding level of the materials. The students’ scores from mid-term exam and final exam were compared using t-test to measure if the “Flipped Classroom” method provided positive effects on the students’ achievements. The results showed that this method provided significant positive effect with p-value .0352 at alpha .05 between pre-test and post-test scores. Students also provided positive feedbacks on the implementation of this method as more of them understood the materials better after the intervention. There were threats to the validity of the study, which were discussed and acknowledged for improvement in future research.
