Abstract
Quickflow is generated by processes ranging from infiltration exess overland to subsurface strormflow and is concentrated into storm hydrograph form by the basin topography and network geometry. A succession of such hydrographs over a period in the main valley bottom carves in the alluvium a channel whose form reflects the interaction between the local sedimentology and the physical mechanisms of channel flow. Particulary important physical processes are those determining the distribution and magnitude of bed shear stress exerted by the flow, the momentum transfer from rapid to slow zones of flow, the velocity distribution with depth and across the channel, and the rate of transformation of potensial energy to kinetic energy and work.
