Abstract
Artificial intelligence is a branch in computer science which tries to make machines act like human. Artificial neural network imitates human biological learning process, which also creates some foundations in pattern recognition.An application area of pattern recognition is in learning foreign languages that use computer to help human to understand the roles of new foreign characters, especially graphical characters, such as in Japanese. Our goal in this research is to build a system which would be able to recognize handwriting in Japanese Hiragana and Katakana characters, by using artificial neural network with back propagation learning mechanism.
