Abstract
Each language has its own characteristics that distinguish it from other languages. So it is with Japanese. One example is in the case of benefactive-causative. In Japanese, benefactive-causative associated with this meaning can be represented by causative verbs with benefactive meanings, or by a combination of causative and benefactive verbs. This study discusses benefactive-causative sentences using the combination of causative and benefactive verbs that often make foreign language learners difficult to understand the meanings or the role, especially, because in Japanese, the causative verbs consist of lexical causative verbs and morphological causative verbs that can both be combined with benefactive verbs. Moreover, the benefactive verbs in Japanese have 7 different variants, giving different meanings or pragmatic roles when used together with the causative verbs in an utterance. Understanding the meaning and the pragmatic role of benefactive causative sentences in an utterance needs to consider the context of the utterance, setting, speech situation, and other things related to the participants involved in the utterance. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative method with distributional analysis, by using the elements of the language as the determinant to analyze the benefactive-causative markers, and pragmatic identity or comparing method to analyze the pragmatic sides of the speech context. The result of this research shows that the causative and benefactive verbs used in a benefactive-causative sentence can mark the pragmatic role of the participants involved in the utterance.
