Abstract

Parents often use violence to punish their children. This is one of the social problems that often occur in Japan. These acts of violence if left unchecked will have a serious impact on children's physical and mental health, which is reflected in the anime Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso. This study uses the anime Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso as a data source with the aim of analyzing the personality dynamics of Arima Kousei and descriptive analysis for its method. The dialogues and events related to the main character of this anime are analyzed using psychoanalytic theory which focuses on personality dynamics. Personality dynamics are related to the process of channeling psychic energy and fulfilling instincts including the id, ego, and super ego. The impulses from instincts and the channeling of psychic energy create an anxiety that causes conflict, which then triggers the ego's defense mechanisms to control the anxiety generated by the id. In this anime, Arima Kousei shows anxiety which is described with fear, confusion, and discomfort when he is imagined by his mother's shadow. This creates neurotic anxiety due to having received punishment as a child.
