Abstract

Language learning and cultural learning are inextricably linked to each other.Foreign language learners who are equipped with cultural understanding willpossess“interculturalcompetence,”whichisessentialincross-cultural crossculturalcommunication. In Indonesia, learning Chinese at the beginner level is stillhighly reliant on textbooks. Therefore, in determining textbooks, teachersmust carefully evaluate every cultural aspect for students to know andcomprehend while considering appropriate delivery method options. Thisresearch analyzes the beginner-level textbook, “Bahasa Tionghoa ZamanSekarang,” which has a specifi c target audience, namely learners who speakIndonesian as their fi rst language. The aspects analyzed are the culturalcontent in the textbook and the method of delivery. This qualitativedescriptive research identifi es the cultural content data presented in thetextbook, whose form of culture and delivery are then described andanalyzed. The results of the analysis show that the textbook is remarkablyrich in cultural content, especially Chinese culture. The cultural diversity ofideas, activities, and artifacts conveyed in various delivery forms within thetextbook greatly supports effective learning of Chinese communication toavoid cultural misunderstandings. Considering the evolving culture and thestudy that has been done, the authors provide several suggestions to developthe textbook used in the future.
