Abstract
Experiencing Chinatown (Pecinan) in Lasem, Central Java, Indonesia by walking down the street and enjoying the beauty of the Peranakan house gateways through their appearance renders its own enthusiasm. The artwork is representation of the Peranakan house gateways that wear respective “clothes” that carry their own characteristics, which include both the tangible and intangible values. Tangible characteristics are characterized by the different aesthetic elements, details and colors, whereas traits with intangible values are the historical and cultural contents. This illustration is also a symbol of the struggle of “historical and cultural expert groups”; namely the gateways, in order to be able to survive in modern times, which often erodes historical and cultural values as well as erodes particular identity. However, the gateways today are often vintage, classic, or heritage- themed photo object. Additionally, the gateways most often become a contemporary style of photo background. Therefore, it could be said that the existence of the gateways contributes to the current lifestyle
