Abstract

When one is learning English, one thing that commonly perceived as difficult is English grammar. Grammar is often considered as the barrier in communication, because learners become anxious to speak in English for fear of making grammatical mistakes. The traditional method in grammar learning was focusing on delivering grammatical rules to the learners, accompanied by a bunch of written exercises to improve accuracy. Yet, this kind of method was considered not effective as the learners found it difficult to use the grammar in real communication. Along with the development of communicative language teaching method, revolution in grammar teaching method appeared. The teaching of grammar need to balance fluency and accuracy; in other words, the focus should not only on rules but also on how to apply the rules in real communication. D3 English Program at Maranatha Christian University is one of the programs that apply the new method in grammar teaching. In realization that the students who enter the program might have experienced traditional grammar teaching and learning in their previous learning, this research tries to find out how the students in D3 English Program perceive the new grammar teaching method through questionnaires given to the students who have finished four semesters learning grammar in the Program. Based on the result of the questionnaires, it is found that the students consider grammar important and hope to improve their grammar. Their perception on the new grammar teaching and learning techniques applied is also positive, meaning that they agree that it is important to be able to master grammatical rules as well as to apply the rules in real communication, especially when communicating in written forms.
