Abstract

The structure of curriculum in Chinese Department in Higher Education in Indonesia, usually could be divided into two big parts of lessons, i.e. Chinese Language Skills and Cultural Knowledge. The Cultural Knowledge includes Chinese Literature, History, and Philosophy. The main contents of Chinese Philosophy would be Confucianism and Taoism. Both isms have a very long history and huge of thinkers and thoughts. As an introduction with only several hours a week of classes, we should grasp the core contents these of thoughts. The core of Confucianism would be back to its founder Confucius, which we can learn his thoughts through “The Analects / Lun Yu”. The Core of Taoism would be back to its founder Lao Zi, which we can learn his thoughts trough his book “Lao Zi / Tao Te Ching”. Tao Te Ching is a very popular Chinese classic that has been translated into many languages in the world, including Indonesian. This paper try to analyze Indonesian translation of the Tao Te Ching to find out the problems related to resource texts, translation of metaphor, domestication and foreignization of philosophical terms, the existence of difficult characters or words elicitation and the use of Latin alphabet to help reader read resource text in Han characters. The results show that there are still some problems related to these aspects, and still need further research for the sake of Chinese Language and Culture education in Indonesia.
