Abstract

Plaque in the oral cavity will lead to a wide range of dental and oral diseases, including caries, gingivitis, and periodontitis. As already known, dental caries is an infectious disease that can cause damage to tooth structure regardless of age. Therefore, preventions need to be done early on that aims to prevent caries or at least reduce the high incidence of caries. Caries prevention can be done in various ways, one of which is to use xylitol as a sweetener in foods or beverages. Lately, xylitol is widely used because it has a preventive effect against caries and reduce plaque formation in the oral cavity. Xylitol is an artificial sweetener that tastes like sugar, but contain less carbohydrates and calories. Xylitol is not metabolized by cariogenic bacteria in the oral cavity, so as not to cause a decrease in pH of the oral cavity that can prevent demineralization email. Xylitol chewing gum can cause stimulated salivary flow which aims to neutralize the acid and reduce plaque formation and bacterial attachment. Xylitol chewing gum can be used as one way of preventing dental and oral disease because xylitol is not metabolized by cariogenic bacteria. Therefore would not decrease the pH in the oral cavity so that the demineralization email is not occur. In these conditions the accumulation of plaque on tooth surfaces will also be reduced.
