Abstract

Cirebon is one of city of culture in West Java. Various kind of arts are produced here, some of them are mirror painting, Cirebon Mask, and Cirebon Batik. In this biblio study will be discussed about visual language of Cirebon Mask. Cirebon Mask or usually called by Babakan Mask is the mask which is used for ritual dances. The Mask Dance is such a populace art which performes dances with the dancers use Cirebon Mask or cover. The Cirebon Mask is the symbol to the Creation of the Universe based on the belief system ancient of Indonesia and Hindu-Budhis-Majapahit. In the performance of Cirebon Mask usually illustrates human's life. Start from the first creation of man and universe until the life at the present, as well with every character which human posses. The visual language of Cirebon Mask reflects from the color and character from the mask that wished to perform, such as Panji, Kalana, Samba, Tumenggung, Rumyam, and Pendem. The result of this biblio study is that the visual language form Cirebon Mask reflect the character and figure that wished to be exposed in this mask dance, which is given esthetical element in form of ornament. The ornament is made to strenghten the characteristic in Cirebon Mask.
