Abstract
Learning self-help skills like dressing is considered to be important for child with mental retardation, especially if the child have not acquired the skills to a degree that correspond to his chronological age (Lent, 1975; Westling & Murden, 1977 in Westling & Fox, 2000). With limitations in cognitive functioning, special procedures must be applied so that his dressing skills can be enhance, and reducing the amount of assistance from others. For the last four decades, many studies showed the success of applying behavioral techniques to teach child with metal retardation, specifically, the used of total task presentation chaining in behavior modification. With this technique, child attemps all the steps from the beginning to the end of the chain on each trial until all steps are mastered. The purpose of using total task presentation chaining in this case is enhancing dressing skills in a boy with mild mental retardation age 4 years 11 months. This program showed improvement in child’s dressing skills. The child can wear t-shirt and pants using verbal prompt only.
