Abstract
There were some architectural and interior changes in some Yogyakarta’s Catholic churches built around the period of early Catholic expansion and development in Indonesia. These changes occurred because of the contact between Catholic’s religion concepts and values with Javanese local culture. These changes obviously happened with the influence of Catholic missionary situation, also political and socio-cultural situation in Yogyakarta at that time, which created churches with Javanese characteristics. And these physical appearance changes in the church buildings occurred in certain pattern that indicates inculturation process between Catholic religion with Javanese culture. In order to find the inculturation pattern, these changes occurred were related to the community background, including factors such as physical environment situation, socio-cultural concept of Javanese people at that time, missionary methods used on the case-study region, and inculturation theory in Catholic perspective. It was then found that inculturation in Catholic church building would never reached the final stage or be syncretized with local culture, because the religion itself had norms which could not be substituted.
