Abstract

Latohan is one of the typical Lasem batik motifs whose shape was inspired by the Caulerpa lentillifera plant or sea grapes, which is known as Latoh, locally. The plant is spread across Indonesian waters, but it is only used by Lasem to produce cultural products. Written batik has been recognized by UNESCO since 2009 as an intangible cultural heritage of Indonesia. This shows that the Latohan motif is a special, relevant, and important art, which needs to be studied. Therefore, this study aims to provide a different perspective on Latohan's motifs. Assisted by the concept of Third Space and the symbolic interaction approach, the facts of the Latoh plant, the art, the interpretation of the meaning contained in the art, the relationship between them, and the implementation were studied. An analysis of the literature review was carried out, followed by observations of Lasem, exploration of the motifs on the batik, in�depth interviews, evaluation, and interpretation. The results show the wealth of tangible and intangible latohan motifs, which can contribute to strengthening the nation's identity, as well as serve as a source of reference for similar studies.
