Abstract

Families and parents of children with disabilities have been identified as resilient, yet have shared many stressors and threats to that resilience. Limited research attempts to investigate resiliency levels in siblings of children with special needs. The present study aims to evaluate the role of self-esteem and two dimension of attachment (i.e., attachment anxiety and avoidance) on resilience among adolescents with siblings of children with special needs. Participants were recruited with purposive technique sampling through e-flyers distributed to all families within several communities of children with special needs in Bandung. Adolescents 13-18 years of age were recruited (n=30). Each participant completed the Resiliency Scales (Benard), Self-Esteem Inventory (Coopersmith), and An Adaptation of the Experiences in Close Relationships Scale-Revised for Use with Children and Adolescents (Bowlby) in Indonesian. These three measuring tools have a high level of reliability. Using multiple linear regression, we found that partially self-esteem and attachment anxiety was significantly contributes to resilience (R2 1 =.314; R2 2 =.238;p<.05) however attachment avoidance was not significantly contributes to resilience (R2 3 =.089;p>.05). The findings indicate that high level of self-esteem and low levels of attachment anxiety may be associated with greater resilience. This finding implies that it is important to pay attention to self-esteem and the attachment between parents and children to promote resilience of adolescents with siblings of children with special needs, so that they can face pressure as siblings of children with special needs.
