This paper discusses laesan, an Indonesian traditional performance, which originates from Lasem in Central Java, Indonesia. It aims to uncover the hidden messages of the laesan through the interaction between laes1, as the dancer who falls into a trance, and the scenes in laesan, namely ngenuwun, kurungan, dolanan, pengobatan, pamitan, and penutupan2. This qualitative study uses a phenomenology approach, as a research design. The data was collected through observations and interviews, completing the analysis. The findings present that the laesan is not merely a traditional performance, but a symbol of balance and simplicity that reveals through the messages which relate it to the human life cycle. It is expected that this study could add to the richness of Lasem cultural heritage. Moreover, the traditional performance of laesan ensures the continuation, preservation and maintenance of Lasem cultural component through times.
