Abstract
Abstract: Aging is a natural process in the life of a human being. As for human beings, getting old, mostly referred to the decreasing function either physically, mentally or psychologically. This condition of decreasing function of the seniors risen up various problems that caused them to live uncomfortably in their own former environment. Basically, they would need a home with special treatments which can help them to sustain their life habits as normal as they were younger. This research discussed the accessibility of the retirement home environment as one of the important aspects of maintaining the elders’ life sustainability. The discussion referred to four main principles of accessibility required in an environment: amenity, usability, safety, and independence. It was done based on the observation on the dining room activities in Panti Tresna Wredha retirement home. The observation included three conditions of female respondents who: a) walk with normal walking ability, b) walk using a wheel rollator walker, and c) walk using a four-legged walker. It is found that to accomplish the principles of accessibility, any retirement home designs should put more concern to the design of circulation path, clearance between furnitur layouts, and furnitur design.
