Abstract

Today, Bachelor Program in Visual Communicaton Design Department is highly needed and also a favorite program among the prospective students. Because of that many new competitors in the same educational level program have been growing and they also offer the same level of excellence in their program. Based on that, Bachelor Degree in Visual Communicaton Design Department at Maranatha Christian University needs to ensure that the quality of its program could balance out and compete to win the competition map in a similar bachelor program in Indonesia. As we all know, the business of education will always been affected by the structures and infrastructures of the institution facilities, but those attributes will become secondary matters if the quality of its educational program could answer the stakeholders needs. This idea becomes the foundation of this research on how the quality of curriculum and learning process could affect the final outcomes achieved by students of Visual Communication Design Bachelor Degree Program at Universitas Kristen Maranatha The instrument used in this research is by conducting an assessment on the phenomenon faced by the participants of Final Project Course, because the design process in this course is the culmination of a learning process that combines all of the capabilities of students’ motor ability, cognitive, and affective. Through the works of final project, students are expected to present the best works in terms of visually and conceptually, and even become one of students’ best portfolios before they work in professional world. However from the Visual Communication Design lecturers’ basic assumptions, we found that students, who smoothly follow and pass all the courses from the 1st semester to the 7st semester, are not necessarily going to achieve the highest grade in their Final Project Course. This raises a question that there are some aspects needed to be explored about the students’ holistic understanding towards the courses they have taken. The method used in this research is qualitative descriptive which will explore more in the quality of teaching methods experienced by students, involving lectures and their teaching materials correlated with the competence of each courses based on the 2010- 2015 National Qualifications Framework Indonesia (KKNI). In this research, the 2010 and 2015 curriculums are also evaluated in various aspects that are associated with the design process in general in order to find the overall weaknesses and strengths in teaching and learning program at Bachelor Degree in Visual Communication Design Department at Maranatha Christian University. This research outcome reveals that not all teaching materials can be well received by students in an integrated way, based on the fact that many students’ 7th semester GPAs do not match with their Final Project grades. This outcome becomes a recommendation for Visual Communication Design Bachelor Degree Program at Maranatha Christian University to review its 2015 KKNI based curriculum and to develop it better.
