Abstract

This study was conducted to examine the relationship of self-compassion and compassion for others in Faculty of Psychology of Maranatha Christian University. This research is important considering the profession that students will be undertaken later as a psychologist who requires a willingness and ability to serve and care for others in need. The results of the study will assist students in understanding the conditions themselves and improve their ability in order to optimally in their profession in the community. The validity of 26 items of Self-Compassion quesioner, ranged from 0552-0772. while the validity of 24 items of Compassion for others quesioner, ranges between 0554-0720. Measurements of the reliability of self-compassion obtained a value of 0.832 which include high reliability category, and compassion for others obtained a value of 0.794 which include high reliability category. Based on a study of 708 college students, found that there are significant relationships were relatively very low among self-compassion and compassion for others (r = 0.138). This is in accordance with the Neff’s opinion that individual can be kind to others, but being hard on himself. Suggestions for further researches are explore other variables related to compassion for others, such as fear of compassion and schawrtz value.
