Abstract

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a group of metabolic disorder that is characterized by hyperglycemia due to insulin secretion or function disorder. Physalis minina, Linn., PSidium guajava, Linn., Switenia mahagoni, Jacq are used empirically as hypoglycemic medicine. Objectives: to compare the effect of Physalis minina, Linn., Psidium guajava, Linn., Sweitenia mahagoni, Jacq ethanol extract against the hypogycaemic effect of alloxan induced diabetic mice. Method: Thirty alloxan induced diabetic Swiss Webster given Physalis minina, Linn. Ethanol extract 156 mg/kgBBl Psidium guajava, Linn. Ethanol extract 1591,2 mg/kgBB, Sweitenia mahagoni, Jacq ethanol extract 1574,9 mg/kgBB mencit, gom arab 1%, dan glibenklamid 1,3 mg/kgBB for 7 days. The fasting glucose level of those mice was measured on the eight day. The data were analyzed using ANOVA and continued with Tukey HSD test. Results: there was highly significant difference between fasting blood glucose decrement of Physalis minina, Linn. ethanol extract group (54,26+- 4,617%), Psidium guajava, Linn. ethanol extract group (54,44 +/- 7,338%), Sweitenia mahagoni, Jacq ethanol ectract group (71,3 +/-11,80%) against negative control gorup (1,4017 +/- 4.7456%)(p<0,01). Conclusions: Physalis minina, Linn., Psidium guajava, Linn., Sweitenia mahagoni, Jacq ethanol extract can decrease blood glucose level of mice which induced by alloxan, Sweitenia mahagoni, Jacq ethanol extract has the best effect.
