Abstract

Porphyromonas gingivalis is one of the microorganisms that cause periodontitis. Chlorhexidine is proven to have an antibacterial effect but it can cause side effects inter alia discolored teeth, pain, and xerostomia. Longan peel is a natural product that can act as an antibacterial because of its active compounds such as phenolics, tannins, flavonoids, and triterpenoids. This study aimed to determine the antibacterial effect of longan peel extract on Porphyromonas gingivalis ATCC 33277 by measuring the average diameter of the inhibition zone. This was a laboratory experimental study using experimental groups at concentrations of 3.125%, 6.25%, 12.5%, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%. The results showed that the experimental group at a concentration of 100% extract produced an inhibition zone of 10.08 mm but not greater than 0.2% chlorhexidine which had 11.96 mm. While the smallest inhibition zone was conducted by longan peel with 25% extract which was 4.05 mm. In conclusion, there is an antibacterial effect of the ethanol extract of longan peel (Dimocarpus longan L) against Porphyromonas gingivalis.
