Abstract
With the development of online-based technology in the Internet of Things (IoT) era, it has an impact on the
learning experience in Art and Design higher education. Various Hybrid learning methods and digital
teaching media were developed and formed a new experience, especially experience in the creative process
which was achieved through a collaborative process between Visual Communication Design students. It is
known that ideation processes that involve collaboration between individuals in a class or study group will
improve outcomes and also enrich the process with a variety of learning experiences if the level of
involvement is high. This writing aims to examine aspects of interaction between students and also between
students and application media that are tools in the design process in online classes.
By using descriptive qualitative methods, this paper attempts to understand these online activities through the
four quadrant theory of engagement which was adapted from Andrew T. Stull and Richard E. Meyer. By
identifying the type of interaction that occurs, the use of digital teaching media in the context of online
collaboration certainly has a different experience for each student involved, but it does not eliminate the
essence of the creative process as in face-to-face offline classes.
