Many popular weight-loss diets are available though little is known about their long term efficacy, safety and ability to improve parameters associated with the risk of cardiovascular disease. In this writing the popular diet programs in America (Atkins, Ornish, South Beach, Zone and Weight Watchers) are compared with those in Indonesia (Food combining, Tiger, Mayo, Blood type diet, and Detoxification). The aim is not to judge which is the best diet program, but to make people understand what they consume and how they manage the diet program to get a healthy body. Low-carbohydrate diets promote greater short term weight loss than low-fat diets because low carbohydrate diets confer transient negative-energy balance, but this also needs long term studies. The key to success to control the body weight does not depend on the diet program, but on the good eating habits. Health care provider should encourage weight loss strategies that are sustainable and beneficial for health overall.
